Abstract
To fulfil the aims of physical education - physical literacy and general education, structural conditions of physical education at school must be appropriate. However, our knowledge about current structural conditions of physical education in Germany is scarce. The aim of this work was to study the current situation of physical education in Germany (amount of physical education and handling of teacher's absence), as well as of extracurricular sport activities (participation rate and type of extracurricular sport activities). Questionnaire data of the Motorik-Module, which is a sub-study of the Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS), formed the basis of this study. Overall, data of 3,167 students were included. On average, 2.63 physical education lessons take place at 1.81 days per week. When the teacher is absent, he/she is substituted by another physical education teacher in 47.2 % of the lessons. 22.7 % of the students participate in an extracurricular sport activity. In the federal states of former Eastern Germany, frequency and extent of physical education is higher, and more students participate in extracurricular sport activities. The daily physical education lesson in primary schools, required by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs and the German Olympic Sports Confederation, currently does not take place. Positive tendencies can be observed in secondary schools. They do not achieve the goal of three lessons per week, but achieve relevant improvements compared to previous studies.
