Abstract

Daily activity and sports in childhood are important factors for normal psychosocial and motoric development, whereas intensive physical exertion can imply risks for children with chronic diseases. In the context of sports severe cardiac events like sudden cardiac death in the young are reported. Triggered by exercise, so far undetected electric and structural heart diseases can cause massive physical consequences. Therefore, a detailed Pre-participation Physical Examination is recommended especially in competitive sports consisting of anamnesis and internal and orthopedic examination. ECG is already widely recommended as well, but its introduction as an inherent part of the tests is disputed.
