Abstract

Failures of multi-plate clutches must be ruled out due to safety-relevant functions in drive trains. In addition to long-term damage, spontaneous damages are particularly relevant here. In this paper the load carrying capacity of wet-running multi-plate clutches with organic and metallic friction materials is reported with regard to spontaneous damages. The spontaneous damages are systematically classified into different categories. The experiments reveal that the specific friction loss, which a clutch can bear, increases as the maximum of the specific friction power drops and as the slipping time is extended. These relations are transformed into a calculation method, which can be used to determine the mean specific friction loss required for spontaneous damages. The calculation method enables a quantitative comparison of the load carrying capacity of different friction systems and the evaluation of the influence of system-specific modifications, such as a change in the cooling oil volume flow or the friction lining.
