Abstract
Transplantation is the best method for kidney replacement therapy with a lower morbidity and mortality as well as quality of life compared to dialysis. The transplant function rate is significantly higher from a living donor than from a deceased donor. In addition to these advantages medical and psychosocial together with insurance aspects must be taken into consideration. This review gives a description of the current state of criteria for donor selection, contraindications and risks, a comprehensive picture of the procedure for donor evaluation including individual psychological and legal aspects of insurance problems and shows the perspectives for future developments in the field of living kidney donations.
