Abstract

Thousands of chemicals are traded on the market, but only in a few cases information is available on their distribution and effects on man and the environment. In addition to monitoring actual concentrations of chemical, it is, thus, necessary to establish an environmental specimen bank (ESB) for the retrospective monitoring of chemicals in the future. The bases of an ESB are representative bioindicators of systematically collected biological systems and environmental samples. As a result of the extremely low temperature (T= < -150°C) it is guaranteed that the samples are not subject to chemical changes during long-term storage. The German project is described here, including selected results related to environmental trend monitoring.
