Abstract
Already in childhood and adolescence strong social inequalities in food habits are found. So far, the role of everyday social contexts and subjective interpretations of situations were rarely analysed. The present study focuses explicitly on the explanatory power of these contexts for the development offood habits in adolescence. Data were collectedfrom the German part of the international study 'Health Behaviour in School-aged Children' (HBSC) in 2006 (N=5.046). The findings show that socioeconomic indicators only had a small effect on the food habits of 11- to 15-year olds. The social contexts of family and school rather have an own contribution to the explanation of food habits. Some of the variables even show a stronger explanatory effect than the traditional socio-demographic and socio-economic indicators. Measures related to education had an outstanding importance, especially the cultural capital of the family, self assessed school achievement and school stress. The study suggests a stronger consideration of subjective characteristics and a differentiated analysis of socializing contexts for the explanation of health behaviour.
