Abstract
Within the framework of a project financed by the Swiss National Fund, the EMPA - Timber Department - has investigated the problem of how to improve the sorting of structural timber by means of simple apparatus. The relationships between wood sorting and wood quality, the historical background, the possibilities of assortment forming at different processing stages, as well as the technical means for taking account of different wood characteristics have been presented. Some investigations were made into the evaluation of the suitability of particular technical sorting procedures. This first article on the subject discusses the basic questions of the sorting and quality of wood and practical effects of improved sorting.
