Abstract

The aim of the workshop was to focus on measures and offsite effects suitable for the range of soil and agricultural conditions found in European countries. The published proceedings of 20 papers includes two which report on work demonstrated during the organised field trips. Recommendations for further activities were contributed, and introduce the volume. Papers cover: wind erosion control, in-field shelter systems and shelterbelts; the use of farming systems for runoff and erosion control; gully formation in loam and its control; runoff and erosion control on clayey soils; drainage for soil conservation and stabilisation on slopes; erosion control in maize fields; erosional systems in loess areas; runoff, erosion and sugar beet yields with mulching stubble mulching for erosion control; soil tillage, structure and erosion; the use of organic materials and plant cover for soil surface protection; minimum tillage techniques in dry farming; erosion control in vineyards; a land consolidation project; revision of land management systems; land evaluation and erosion control on mined soils; and land-use recommendations for soil conservation planning. Seventeen of the papers are abstracted separately. -J.W.Cooper
