Abstract
Due to the introduction of drive-by-wire technology in new vehicle concepts, especially of steer- and brake-by-wire, more and more functions will be shifted from mechanical to electronical devices. This leads to more extended and complex software and at the same time, safety requirements are increasing. This article describes proceeding from the current status of software development of functional software, the problems caused by drive-by-wire and explains possible solutions already handled in the aircraft industry during the introduction of fly-by-wire. Learning from the approaches of the aircraft industry, a possible software development process for the automobile industry is derived, that fits on the one hand to the increasing safety requirements, but doesn't exceed on the other hand practicable development effort.
