Abstract

Hypersonic long-term dynamics are investigated in this paper. Since 1997 a new simulator is used for flying qualities evaluations. Peculiarities of hypersonic flight mechanics like novel phugoid dependencies, height mode characteristics and path attitude lags are considered. Current longitudinal handling qualities criteria are compared to pilot ratings and deficiencies of the long-term criteria are addressed. The effect of stick and throttle input time delays on handling qualities is shown. Finally the influence of phugoid and height mode instabilities on handling qualities is considered.
