Abstract

Precisely at the time of" the global crisis the efficiency and flexibility of logistics systems gain increasing attention. Especially the robustness of order picking systems play a crucial role because the most stuff is usually employed there and thus the highest costs incur in this area. This underscores the need for established planning of picking systems. To support the planning a planning tool was developed at the Institute for Materials Handling, Material Flow and Logistics of the Technische Universitat Miinchen. Simulation is used to determine performance of heterogeneous multilevel picking systems. Besides the use in industrial projects the tool is used for systematic investigations of influence factors of order picking systems. The main research objective is the development of design guidelines to support the planner in the selection of planning versions. Using the classical person to good picking the performance is depending on the shelf arrangement. One possibility to reduce the way of the picker is the integration of additional shortcuts between the lanes. In this paper different layout configurations with shortcuts are investigated by the tool and it concludes with a design advice for the positioning of shortcuts.
