Abstract

Fiber composite stuctures show residual stresses due to manufacturing, resulting in distortions called warpage or spring-in. Despite reduction methods including iterative mould adjustment, cure cycle optimization and advanced tooling, small distortions remain. These distortions might affect the performance of high precision composite parts. In this paper a post manufacturing shape adjustment process using shape memory polymer actuator patches is introduced. Finite element modeling of the shape memory effect using an adapted analogy of thermal expansion is shown as well as an optimization algorithm for the determination of proper actuator placement. Simulations and experiments show the feasibility and potential of the method.
