Abstract
In case of very slender structures or in regions with high seismic activity, special strategies have to be used in order to cope with the dynamic structural response. This applies particularly for slender footbridges and filigree roof structures or for general construction members under severe seismic excitation. In doing so, either the structure itself is being designed thus that the dynamic response remains within a tolerable level, both with respect to deformations and internal reactions. Or additional damping elements are applied in order to reduce the deformations and reactions to permissible values. In this context, new semi-active dampers can provide more economical solutions.
