Abstract

Since the introduction of the practical aid “Sustainability and Success Control in Protection Forests” (NaiS) in Switzerland in 2005, the boundary conditions for the management of protection forests in steep terrain have changed fundamentally. Owing to the further development of silvicultural knowledge as well as a clearly defined subsidy system, the management of protection forests was put on a more robust basis. A con-tinuous challenge in protection forest management is the high influence of wild ungulates on forest regeneration. This can significantly affect the chances of achieving silvicultural objectives and thus the effectiveness of silvicultural interventions. A major uncertainty in protection forest management since many years is climate change, which in many places will lead to considerable shifts in tree species composition. Deal-ing with these changes and adapting silvicultural strategies to these new and, depending on the situation, very rapid de-velopments raise novel questions for the managers of the hitherto rather slowly developing protective forest system. In the future, it will be important to make the best possible use of the maneuvering space of silviculture to maintain the current high effectiveness of protection forests.
