Abstract

The purpose of the investigation was to find a method for judging the state of age hardening of an alloy from acoustic emissions during plastic deformation. In the preliminary tests described, two emission maxima, the yield strength maximum and the work hardening maximum, were observed in tensile tests. Using different criteria of evaluation (pulse rate, total pulse, mean amplitude, amplitude analysis) and electron microscopy, the two maxima were explained by different formation mechanisms. The shape of the emission curve as affected by different states of aging is discussed.
