Abstract
The firing system of a 25 MW boiler operating with natural gas was optimized to achieve low pollu-tant emissions. The investigations included measurements as well as CFD-calculauons at a scaled down burner and at full scale. This paper deals with the experimental activities. At the burner model the experiments were conducted with a LDV system, with a Laser Diagnostic System (Laser Induced Fluorescence, Rayleigh scattering) and with suction technique to investigate the relations between the flow field, the chemical reaction, the flame temperatures and the NOx emissions. The results of this analysis were verified by measuring the flame temperatures at the original burner with a non cooled ceramic suction pyrometer These investigations give a precise insight into the relations between bur-ner setup, flame structure and pollutant emissions. As a result of these activities an adjustment of mixing fuel and air was found to reduce NOx emissions by 15 % without any increase of CO forma-tion.
