Abstract
The aim of this study was a detailed analysis to improve the competitive ability of the Bavarian swine production by optimization of the breeding programme for the sire breed Piétrain. First, a breeding goal was derived. After that, a model for breeding value estimation was developed which utilizes performances of purebred and cross-bred animals on test stations as well as performances of crossbred animals on test stations in traditional 2-pig pens and sized pens for 12-14 pigs. This included the estimation of quantitative-genetic parameters such as heritabilities and genetic correlations. To optimize the breeding programme, the current population structure and breeding scheme were analyzed. Genetic trends and annual effective population size were estimated to assess the actual breeding programme. Finally, deterministic and stochastic simulations were conducted to work out recommendations to improve the breeding programme.
