Abstract

Along the lower course of the river Salzach a river restoration is mandatory to stop the continuing erosion process of the river bed and to ameliorate the ecosystem's conditions. In recent years, various rehabilitation options have been developed which also include concepts to generate hydropower. The retention studies investigate the flood retention capability of the river's floodplain in each restoration alternative presented. Afterwards, the knowledge about the water retention potentials should be considered in the upcoming decision for one restoration concept. Further, the retention studies contain diverse proposals how to optimize the retention capability of identified or new created retention areas.
