Abstract

The originally expected broad penetration of laparoscopic surgical techniques - even including more challenging operations - could not yet be achieved. The reduced perception of the surgical site and the low degrees of freedom during surgical manipulations are the main obstacles. A major breakthrough will only be conceivable by a consequent use of computer assisted surgery (CAS). Intraoperative perception will be significantly facilitated by navigation, and mechatronic support systems (robotic) will render the extend of dexterity of the surgeon to performing even the most demanding procedures. Currently available systems do not yet offer the full range of possibilities, however, this is to be expected from the next generation. Robotics and navigation, however, are just partial aspects of a universal revolution in surgery. If both aspects are embedded into new therapeutic approaches, integrated data management and new organizational schedules, this may lead to the breakthrough.
