Abstract

The prevention of mental illness such as depression in competitive sports is an important goal in empirical and applied sports psychology. In this context, the present study examines the extent to which the risk of depressive symptoms can be determined by measuring psychological variables. For implementation, an estimation model was set up based on a former project. On the basis of the significant dispositions (coping strategy resignation, dysfunctional attitudes, and recovery), logistic regression was used to estimate the existence of an increased depressive symptomatology. In the second part, these findings were applied to the data of 216 athletes with an existing offer for the prevention of burnout and depression. The results show an increased likelihood of depressive symptoms for 15% of users. The results further illustrate that indirect screening by the collection of important psychological variables can be useful and in practice provides valuable information.
