Abstract
Despite the advent of promising drugs, the main potential for reducing the burden of stroke remains primary prevention. A considerable percentage of events could be avoided by modifying life style factors, including cigarette smoking, physical activity and nutrition, with the help of educational programs. Early treatment of high blood pressure is also an important approach in the prevention of stroke that is currently insufficiently heeded in Germany. Educational programs could additionally help patients to identify warning symptoms such as transient ischemic attacks, allowing an early treatment.
