Abstract

We present results on the resonant excitation and the subsequent decay of adsorbate core holes. As model systems we have chosen weakly coupled adsorbates. All experiments were carried out on a Pt(lll) surface. The adsorbates studied included CO and N2 on the bare metal and on a rare gas spacer layer as well as atomic Ar. Our results show that extramolecular relaxation including charge transfer is very important when the time evolution of adsorbate core holes is considered.
