Abstract
The representation of a quantum ensemble as minimal set of pure states was discussed. The density matrix ρ for an n-level system was found to decomposed into the minimum number of pure states necessary to calculate physical observables. The analysis showed that the decomposition provided physical insight as the explicit contribution of each pure state to the dynamics of the system was readily apparent.
