Abstract
The introduction of microscopy into surgery together with the invention of suitable surgical instruments has made possible the repair of the finest peripheral nerves and the anastomoses of blood vessels below a millimeter in diameter. Several cases are reported in which totally separated fingers, thumbs and hands have been successfully replanted. Larger masses of skin and subcutaneous tissue can also be freely transplanted using these techniques.
