Abstract

In landscapes with comprehensive disappearance of grassland, transformation of species-poor grassland into extensively used meadows is desired. In the formely largest fen area in southern Germany, the Donaumoos, situated about 70 km north of Munich, investigations to restore fen litter meadows have taken place. It was examined to which extent the hay of fen litter meadows containing autochthonous seeds may be appropriate for restoration. After five years, the cover of fen species reaches 60 %, 57 species of fen titter meadows and calcareous fen vegetation could establish. It is shown, that the transport of species depends on the time of mowing, the number of species on the sites of origin and the dispersal and spreading strategies of species. Classification of generative and vegetative behaviour show typical dispersal and spreading strategies of fen litter species.
