Abstract

Critical weather-related road surface conditions affect traffic flow and safety negatively. A model was developed to get spatial and temporal information on road surface conditions continuously. Input data are road weather data that are acquired conventionally with stationary sensors within the framework of corridor control systems, as well as vehicle-generated information, what is called extended floating car data. Fuzzy logic models fuse these data and generate optimized information on road surface condition, moisture, road surface temperatures and sleekness warnings. In case of reduced grip these results shall enable optimized traffic control and winter maintenance measures.
