Abstract
The average molecular orientation Szz of aromatic molecules dissolved in nematic mesophages has been determined by optical polarization experiments. A theoretical relation between the order parameter Szz and the principal polarizabilities of the solute molecules has been derived, and has been verified for unsubstituted aromatic molecules. A new method for the determination of principal polarizabilities is suggested.
