Abstract
Up to now, liquid crystals have not been used extensively as lubricants in tribology. When the frictional behaviour of two liquid crystals was determined in a twin disk machine, they showed significantly lower coefficients of friction than a mineral oil and an ester oil over a wide range of operating conditions. Especially for conditions of low load and low sliding ratio, one of the test fluids showed a very low friction coefficient of μ<0.001.
