Abstract
The use of electron cyclotron heating and current drive in ASDEX Upgrade and features of ECRH were discussed. The electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) in ASDEX Upgrade was designed to produce a narrow deposition profile by poloidal mirror steering. The generation of heatwaves for transport studies was considered important for ASDEX Upgrade. The variation of the deposition location, and the local heating and current drive controlled the sawtooth instability.
