Abstract
When at the beginning of the 1970s the electric road vehicle was rediscovered and came to be redeveloped, circumstances were fundamentally different from those prevailing when it first emerged at the beginning of the century. Now it has to compete technically as a small-volume product with a multitude of different mass-produced combustion-engined vehicles firmly established in the market, and it has to withstand comparison with them over a very wide range of features. The high weight of the batteries is still a major restriction. Neither service nor energy considerations would suggest any increase in demand for these vehicles in the medium term. The advantages of the electric car lie clearly in the fields of energy politics and environmental protection.
