Abstract

In the reported experiments, milled wood lignins were isolated using Bjorkman's method. With ultrasonics, the dioxane extraction of ball-milled spruce wood can be completed in 14 hr. The purified lignins, characterized by yield, methoxyl content, polysaccharide content and composition, molecular size distribution, and molecular weight, were extracted with water and dilute acid to isolate fractions of varying liqnin:polysaccharide ratios and polysaccharide composition. Additional low-molecular-weight fractions were obtained by gel filtration and analyzed with special regard to polysaccharide content. Chemical analysis and electron microscopic observations give additional information on the association of polysaccharides and lignin in the cell walls of wood.
