Radiation damping of a quantum harmonic oscillator

Abstract

Using a fully coupled oscillator model for the quantum mechanical description of a harmonically bound electron in a radiation field, exact results about the dissipative properties of the system in thermal equilibrium are derived. In particular one gets, without any additional assumption, the classical equation of motion of an oscillating electron damped by radiation and the scattering cross section of the system for incident light.
