Abstract

We discuss the multiple scattering of heavy quark-antiquark pairs in nuclei as a posisible source of the A-dependence observed in ψ and γ production yields recently measured with 800 GeV/c protons incident on several nuclear targets. We point out that the standard "color transparency" scenario does not work, whereas the propagation of the cc or bb pairs in color octet intermediate states provides a possible mechanism for A-dependent effects.
