Abstract
Coronary angiography is considered to be the gold standard for the characterization of coronary artery disease (CAD), but recent data suggest the clinical importance of functional parameters defining the severity and extent of the disease process for subsequent therapeutic patient management. Positron emission tomography (PET) represents an advanced imaging technology that allows the accurate delineation of regional myocardial tracer distribution, which yields high diagnostic accuracy for the detection of CAD. PET is used in several institutions in combination with pharmacological stress testing for the clinical characterization of patients with CAD. Short-lived radiopharmaceuticals used for PET imaging allow the combined evaluation of flow and other tissue functions, such as metabolism, which have to be shown to be useful in the assessment of extent and severity of myocardial disease.
