Abstract

The central importance of psychosocial interaction for human development is evolution-based. Healthy interaction is not only a prerequisite for the acquisition of social skills but also shapes cognitive abilities. In contrast, psychosocial deprivation is associated with devastating consequences for child development. This became particularly relevant in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the restrictions and their consequences, the psychosocial environment of families was significantly affected. The effects on parents and children were investigated in the CoronabaBY study. Among other things, an increase in parental stress and childhood regulation disorders were shown, which are accompanied by an increased risk of psychological disorders in schoolchildren. The relevance of psychosocial interaction for early childhood development can also be demonstrated by studying the effects of media use. The achievement of foreign languages in toddlers is only possible through direct interaction and not by using audiovisual media. The close linkage of childhood development with psychosocial interaction increases the vulnerability of babies and infants to crisis-associated environmental changes.
