Abstract

The Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS) is the most widely used measure for the assessment of relationship quality internationally. A German version of the DAS exists, but knowledge regarding the psychometric properties of the German DAS is limited. Hence, we investigated the psychometric properties of the DAS in a sample of N = 194 persons from the general population. A three-factorial structure representing the dimensions of satisfaction, cohesion, and consensus was found to be appropriate. There was some divergence of the item pattern as compared to the original form, and we were not able to reproduce the affectional expression scale. The DAS as a whole and the three subscales showed good internal consistency (DAS total: α = .90). Finally, we propose a new three-dimensional short form, the DAS-12. The subscales and the total scale of the short form show satisfactory internal consistency (DAS-12 total: α = .79). Correlational analyses provide preliminary evidence for the validity of the short form.
