Abstract
Over the last few decades alpine climbing has enjoyed increasing popularity, particularly for mountain tours and trekking holidays in the higher regions of the Alps, the Andes and the Himalayas. Commercial packages with tight schedules and means of rapid passive ascent often lead climbers to neglect the proper acclimatisation periods. However, high altitudes can present considerable health risks if sufficient acclimatisation is neglected or the climber's health does not meet the necessary requirements. The present paper discusses preventive measures and current treatment recommendations for acute symptoms of high-altitude illness.
