Abstract

The fatigue crack propagation behavior of short surface cracks was investigated on an age-hardened Ti-8. 6Al Alloy with grain sizes of about 20 mu m and 100 mu m. The crack shape of individual short cracks was evaluated by a successive surface layer removal through electropolishing on specimens fatigued to various numbers of cycles. It was found that the fine grain size material exhibited a higher resistance against fatigue crack propagation in the short crack regime as compared to the coarse grained alloy. The observed crack growth retardation phenomena in both microstructures were strongly dependent on the actual crack shape.
