Abstract

It is a privilege to contribute to this volume dedicated to the memory of Guido Altarelli, to pay tribute to his role in the development of perturbative QCD, and to acknowledge his insights so generously shared with us. Although the bulk of this article talks about the current status of QCD, and about ideas for the future, we shall devote a paragraph to describing Guido’s role in the early years. This description will be brief, because the issues of 40 years ago are no longer the issues of today. It is the nature of progress that some of the problems that were struggled with in the early days of QCD are no longer as difficult, precisely because of the advances in the intervening years. The early days of QCD are described at length in refs. [Altarelli (2012); Ellis (2017)].
