Abstract
The ″touch free″ distance measurements became important especially during industrial automation. The technological development during the last years permits the industrial application of components and methods used almost exclusively until now (due to other high costs) in air-and space travel or military applications. The known measurement methods with impulse radar in aircraft, safety, FM-CW-radar in aircraft height measurements and so called tone-ranging in satellite navigation are presented, as well as the applications of laser-based distance measuring equipment are applied in vehicular traffic, blast furnace operation and geometric measurements. Various measuring equipment operating on impulse radar or tone ranging principles is introduced.
