Abstract
Background: The individual lifestyles of medical students have a direct influence on later medical practice as health advocates - especially in the context of prevention and promotion of health. Moreover, the individual lifestyle influences the satisfaction with life and risk of Burnout. Theore, investigating the relationship between health behavior, satisfaction with life and career prospects of medical students is important in order to propose interventions for specific target groups. Materials and methods: A quantitative sectional survey on the health behavior of medical students (body weight, exercise, nicotine consumption and alcohol consumption), satisfaction with life and career opportunities was conducted in Hannover and Halle. Results: 90% of the medical students in the fifth academic year answered the questionnaire. Students, who considered withdrawing from their studies (n=81 (27,2%)) are less satisfied with their health situation and their life in general. The health-related well-being of smokers is comparatively low. We found a positive association between various sub dimensions of life-satisfaction with physical exercise and alcohol consumption. Conclusions: An anticipated withdrawal from studying turned out to be the most important predictor of health- related and general satisfaction with life among medical students. The results suggest various health promotion measures for specific target groups among medical students.
