Abstract
Calculation procedures developed at the Department of Material Handling Engineering of the Technical University of Munich are used to calculate a vertical screw conveyor which unloads alumina and petrol coke out of ships. To prove how exact the calculation of the power requirement and the predicted capacity match with reality, and to be able to make statements about the usability of new theories and methods of calculation, the performance of the ship unloader's vertical screw is measured. These measurements show the actual required power to be about 20% lower than precalculated, and the demanded capacity of 25% to be exceeded. The calculation and design of all screw conveyors used on this ship unloader allow successfully good prediction.
