Abstract

Potassium hydroxyoctaoxodizincatedichromate (1106-83-9) is a chromate compound that is commonly used as a corrosion and rust inhibitor in the formulation of paints and primers. Although the zinc and potassium counter ions modulate the physical and chemical characteristics of the molecule, the important anticorrosion benefits and toxicological effects arise from the chromate anion. Chromates and essentially all hexavalent chromium compounds are carcinogenic and probably genotoxic. Other toxicological effects include respiratory cancers and immunological responses such as dermatitis and asthma, and reproductive toxicity.
