Abstract

In many patients adequate postoperative pain relief can be achieved by an optimal use of modern pain management strategies. However, sufficient treatment of postoperative pain is not only important for patients, it is as well beneficial for physicians, nursing staff and hospitals administration. The basis of success is an efficient communication between patients, surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing staff and later on social workers. The system should contain permanent dialog, sufficient structures like an interdisciplinary acute pain service and necessarily a written informed consent with fixed responsibilities of the involved disciplines. Continuous education and training in principles and techniques of postoperative pain treatment for all coworkers is essential. Besides standardized basic analgesia and especially after extensive surgery patient-controlled techniques result in excellent pain relief and provide the most effective means in improving outcome after surgery.
