Abstract

Autopsies (dissections or cadaver dissections) from clinical or forensic indications in cases of unclear, premature (usually <40 years of age, in individual cases also later) or cardiovascular deaths serve, in addition to the definitive clarification of the cause, to identify or distinguish between genetic causes. These are particularly relevant in preventive terms for biologically related family members, especially after extensive autopsies without determination of the cause of death (mors sine materia). A molecular autopsy aims at a postmortem clarification of the cause of death by identifying or confirming a hereditary cardiovascular disease. In this consensus paper, expert recommendations on the current necessity, indications and performance of a molecular autopsy are formulated. In addition, if a genetic cardiovascular disease is suspected, a systematic clinical (and possibly genetic) examination of family members should be performed.
