Abstract

The paper presents the detailed design of a conical ring constructed with V-fold bars. The discussed designs follow recent ESA patents and have been implemented in a demonstrator model, successfully manufactured and tested. The main options investigated include spring and electric motor actuation. Installation of springs in V-fold joints as well as a release cable was the first option investigated. The demonstrator model also contemplated the use of three electric motors as actuators instead of springs in all V-fold hinges. The latter deployment actuation method was shown at the large deployable antenna workshop in ESTEC, demonstrating the performances that can be achieved by this architecture, mainly low mass, high deployed stiffness, scalability to large dimensions and potential for modularity.
