Abstract

Photolysis of maleic anhydride and maleimides in polar solvents (aliphatic alcohols and dimethylformamide) were investigated by ESR spectroscopy. In maleic anhydride-methanol solution, H· and ·CH2OH radical adducts have been observed, {A figure is presented} whereas solution in dimethylformamide leads to radical anions of maleic anhydride with both ring and ring opened structure. {A figure is presented} In maleimide-alcohol solutions radical anions of maleimide, RĊHOH radicals and R-ĊHOH adducts to maleimides have been detected. {A figure is presented} In dimethyl formamide solution only radical anions of maleimides have been observed. Based on the experimental results, mechanisms for the formation of the radicals and the radical ions are proposed.
