Abstract
Inelastic zone boundary phonon Raman scattering induced by elastic ("Bragg") magnetic scattering from antiferromagnetic spin superstructures has been observed in EuTe and VI2. The simultaneous spin-phonon excitation is due to spin-orbit coupling in EuTe, whereas in VI2 it is due to phonon modulation of the exchange interaction.
