Abstract

Cell suspension cultures derived from apple tissues of the cultivar 'Alkmene' (Malus domestica) were examined. Both cultures accumulated chlorogenic acid, derivatives of ferulic and sinapic acid, as well as flavanols, from which epicatechin and the procyanidins B2, B5, and C1 could be identified. The latter have not been described in apple cell cultures so far. Most of the hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives accumulated parallel to culture growth. The contents of epicatechin and procyanidins increased later on in the cell division phase. Both cell suspension cultures exhibited great differences in their flavanol contents.
