Abstract

In the upland areas of Germany, the Deutsche Mittelgebirge, soil formation takes place exclusively on relocated substrates the origin of which is closely tied in with Pleistocene periglacial processes. The same is true for the complet element cycle of the vegetation stands in the region of seminatural forest ecosystems under discussion here, to the extent that it reaches through the overlying organic horizons and into the mineral soil. As a rule periglacial slope deposits are preserved at a thickness that has largely prevented Holocene pedogenesis from penetrating through it and into the underlying bedrock. -from English summary
